Use annotations in chat
An annotation combines selected text with your comment. Use it to identify a passage and send your question beside that passage.
Before you start
You need permission to send chat messages and an allowed model. Selections from a generated chat view do not require a selected mailbox. Email and knowledge sources require current access to that source.
Insert a selection and write a comment
- Select the passage in the displayed view.
- Click Add to chat. The composer inserts the annotation at its last cursor position. You can write before and after it.
- Click the annotation card to open its details.
- Edit the Comment field. To remove the card, click Remove annotation.
- Send the message with the send button or your configured send shortcut.
Enter adds a line in the Comment field. Editing a comment does not start a model call.
Check the result
After sending, chat history preserves the order of your prose, selected passages, and comments. In protected chats, the existing encryption policy protects the selection and comment. The native application displays readable annotation text without a full annotation editor.
Copy and paste
A selection can include prose and annotation cards. Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V preserve their order and restore the Selected text and Comment fields.
Plain text remains plain text. The composer recognizes the supported annotation block. Unknown or invalid HTML becomes visible text. Scripts and hidden content do not become executable composer content.
Source checks and recovery
A sourced card shows Linked to an earlier answer. A copied source ID requests access. It does not grant access.
On send and message edit, the server checks the source permissions and exact answer/UI revision pair. It never substitutes a newer output or silently converts a denied source into an annotation without a source.
- If the source is unavailable or access is denied, the application shows This reference is no longer available. Your draft remains. Remove the affected card before sending again.
- If an external annotation has no source, its selection and comment are literal user content. An external ID does not fetch data from another application.

Limits
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Annotation cards per message | At most 20 |
| Prose, image, and card segments | At most 61 |
| Selected text per card | 1–8,000 characters, with nonblank content |
| Comment per card | At most 8,000 characters |
| Total prose, selection, and comment characters | At most 200,000 |
If content exceeds a limit, the application rejects the change. It does not silently remove earlier cards.
